Do I Have A Hiatal Hernia From Vomiting If I Have Indigestion And Pain Underneath Sternum?

I had a stomach bug or food poisoning two days ago. I could not stop vomiting and having diarrhea. I went to the doctor but he sent me to the ER because my heart rate was 140 from dehydration. I received IV fluids in the ER. I am not longer vomiting or experiencing diarrhea, but I am having horrible indigestion and gas/bloating. There is a severe pain underneath my sternum as if someone is punching me and I feel like I have to burp. This occurs about 2 hours after eating and lasts for several hours. I am eating a very bland diet (white rice, cooked zucchini, broth, applesauce, diluted juices) and did not eat any solid foods for two days during the stomach bug. When should this subside? Do you think I have a hiatal hernia from the vomiting?

Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.
I dont htink that vomiting could cause hiatal hernia but it is possible that you had hiatal hernia previously since it may go with such symptoms which happen when stomach is protruding through diaphragm muscle. It may cause breathing difficulties, nausea, swallowing difficultires and irritation of stomach. It will also be aggravated by certain food or medications, stress and smoking. You need to avoid fried food, carbonated drinks, coffee, alcohol and spicy food. You should eat more milk products, vegetables and boiled food. Also, certain antiacid medications may be required and as last option, it is possible to perform surgical repair of hernia especially if there are progressive respiratory discomfort and dyspepsia. To diagnose it you should do gastroscopy and contrast xrays of stomach.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
