Do Medications For Colitis And BP Cause Elevation In Liver Enzymes?

I am taking mesalamine .375mg four caps a day for nonspecific colitis for 2-3 yrs in addition to BP meds. My blood test showed slightly high liver enzymes. My dr. Told to repeat the test in 1 month. Should I discontinue Apriso/ mesalamine? I also have upcoming colonoscopy on Nov 1. Do you think I should Discontinue the med for that reason too? I may end up with frequent stools. What is your advise?

Hello,

Liver enzymes may be raised because of various causes. In your case, some may be more possible but in every case, it requires an evaluation of the cause.

Most common causes of such liver derangement's are Alcohol, Viral hepatitis, Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, Drugs.

Gamma GT is most commonly raised due to alcohol intake and in case you take alcohol, you need to keep control over it.

If you don't take it, you need following tests: hepatitis virus markers, Ultrasound Abdomen and HIDA scan. A lot many times, the liver dysfunction is due to Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD).

So, if you have any evidence of fatty liver in Ultrasound and your other tests are negative, this rise is liver enzyme would be attributed to NAFLD.

For this, you need to reduce your weight, reduce fat in the diet. This is my personal opinion based on the details available here. If you still have any other query, you may please ask me. Stay Healthy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
