Do Medications For Stroke Cause Constipation?

Due to a foot injury preventing me from exercising and a recent stroke with the added medications of pravastatin aspirin amlodipine I have been experiencing sudden constipation that I have never had. I am 73 years old and female. Doctors and pharmacists I ask said that these medications do not cause constipation but when I read about them online I find out that they do . The constipation is sudden onset and the stools are hard and dry and very difficult to pass. I eat a good diet and am well hydrated . I am getting worried that perhaps the sudden constipation could be caused by a medical problem or maybe it is only caused by the medications and inactivity. What do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
Yes, one of the prescribed medications can cause constipation.
Amlodipine (a calcium channel blocker) used to lower the high BP is known to cause constipation as one of its important side effects.
Consult your treating physician for an alternative effective and a safer medication to control your BP like Angiotensin receptor blocker like Losartan which does not cause constipation.
Besides, you should increase the intake of high fiber diet, adequate fluid intake and a regular exercise which prevent constipation.
Hope the suggestions given above would be useful.
