Do Physical Abuse And Extreme Mood Swings In A Child Be Heriditary?
My ex husband has a mother who was raised In a mental institution and his fathers mother was schitzophrenic and my 7 year old is incredibly angry and both emotionally, and physically abusive, I have scheduled an appointment today with a psychologist, is there anything I should make sure she knows before talking to my son? dawn
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. You ex husband has history of mental disorders in both side of families. Even if there was history of schizophrenia or other mental disorder still it can affect further generations though the risk is less. The mental disorders follow multifactorial inheritance pattern. There is no single gene that can be labelled to cause metal disorders but multiple genes contribute to cause a mental disorders. So the anger outbursts, episodes of abuse your son is showing could be occurring due to history of mental disorder in family. But other psychological factors, environmental factors, parenting also contribute to development of mental disorder. Improvement of any other psychological conflict or stressor results in improvement of mood swings and other symptoms. So take your son to a psychologist and get him evaluated. Conduct disorders, bipolar disorder of childhood onset, attention deficit disorder etc are the possible causes of his behaviour change. If he is having some psychiatric disorder then take the treatment accordingly.
