Do Regular MRIs With Contrast Dye Cause Any Harm To Kidneys?
I I have shown 1 large kidney cyst and 4 little one doe I have kidney disease? ( on CT scans) I also have had Breast cancer to the brain , am well now, and need to have regular Mris with contrast dye. will this cause further damage to the kidneys? worreid. thanks Marcia
Yes, contrast dyes can be hard on the kidneys and repeated contrast dye administration may further impair kidney function. Having a kidney cyst does not necessarily indicate kidney disease as there are simple kidney cysts that cause no problems and there is polycystic kidney disease that presents with multiple cysts such as you have.
You should discuss your concern with your health care providers so that they can either adjust their testing or explain the procedure to you sufficiently to satisfy your concerns. Ask questions such as how often you must have CTs with contrast dye and what cumulative effect will it have on your kidney function. Ask them to explain your current kidney function to you now and how the cysts impact your kidney function and if having contrast dye might worsen an already compromised kidney function.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
