Do Stringy Particles In Urine Suggest Bladder Cancer?

Male, age 74, hypertension under control medication, and diabetes ( no medication diet and excer only Hb1c 6). Microalbuminuria ( 50 mg 300). White stringy particles and few bigger tissue like particles in urine. Consistent. No pain or sensation, strong flow. Otherwise clear. Urinalysis 4 of them within 3 months, negetive for blood, proteins ( one report trace others none). Prostate checked OK. History of stones - very infrequent last episode 3 years ago. Similarly goutish but infrequent. Regular excersie. Noted particles about couple of months ago, subsequent to a confirmed UTI now confirmed cleared. Could this be just inorganic type of particles from food or supplements? Cytology exam of urine is negative. Anxious re bladder cancer. No symptoms. Feel ok.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Looking at the history, investigation reports etc., it seems that these stringy particles and bigger tissue like particles may be mucin threads or white phosphates sediments, which may be perfectly normal present in the urine. However, presence of UTI or presence of some yeast infection, should always be considered, as you had suffered from UTI in the past also.

Therefore recurrent UTI is a possibility, for which you are advised for a periodic urine examination and treatment accordingly, if indicated. If the urine cytology is negative, bladder cancer seems a remote possibility. Still if there are other symptoms regarding this then the diagnosis of bladder cancer should not be relied merely on the cytology of urine.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
