Hi,
Menstrual cycle contains
follicular phase and luteal phase with ovulation in between. Follicular phase is the one during which the follicles with egg develops which gets released during ovulation. Luteal phase, which is also called secretory phase is the one during which the released egg travels through the
fallopian tube which may or may not get fertilized by the sperm.
Usually, luteal phase lasts between 11 to 17 days. But, in most of the women, it is between 12 to 14 days.
Progesterone is the main hormone in the luteal phase, the level of which determines the length of the phase. Lowering levels of progesterone induces
menstruation. The short luteal phase defect is the one in which the woman have less than 10 days length. Short luteal phase may cause infertility. Since, the
gestational sac is about 6 weeks with fetal cardiac activity, there is nothing to worry unless, there is any other indications. Regular follow up with Obstetrician is necessary, because of your age.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pradeepraj, General & Family Physician
