Does Alzheimer S Disease Aggravate Pneumonia?

My father is 77. He has vascular dementia, Alzheimer s, congestive heart failure, COPD, Diabetes, High cholesterol, high BP, sleep apnea and an array of medical issues. He was just admitted to ICU with Pneumonia and they said he is septic. He is in FL and I am in PA. Just wondering is the dementia and Alzheimer s complicate the Pneumonia/Sepsis?

Yes. Brain degeneration causes people to not protect themselves. On the most obvious feature, they do not eat well and become malnurished and dehydrated. Also, on a more subtle area, they do not protect their airway and secretions go into the lung and cause pneumonia. Most people who die with Alzheimer's die from infections.
