Does Amlodipine Along With Valsartan Cause Anemia?
I am 74 years old man. About a year ago my Doc increased the daily statin ( litorva) from 10 to 20 mg per day. He also prescribed me 5 mg amlodipine with 80 mg valsartan to treat my elevated BP. Few months ago I noted a continuous weaknes and fatigue. Blood test revealed mild anemia with hemoglobin of 11.6 gr/dl. Is itpossible that the anemia is caused by this pills combination?
Hi Sir, Thanks for posting in HCM. Amlodipine and Valsartan are the drugs to treat elevated blood pressure. These drugs are not known to cause anaemia. The cause for mild anaemia in your case could be due to bleeding in GI tract, commonly due to piles/fissures or due to nutritional deficiency from poor dietary intake/absorption. Kindly take supplements for a month in the form of iron, folic acid and Vitamin B12 capsules and consume food rich in iron regularly like jaggery and dark-green leafy vegetables. It should improve your iron levels in the body as well as overcome weakness and fatigue. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
