Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My right foot and ankle is extremely swollen, left one somewhat? Is this a side effect of Amlopidine, a medication that I take for high blood pressure? I have been taking this medication for quite sometime and had some swelling but today it is extreme. I also have had repeated UTIs lately. Should I see my doctor soon about kidney issues?
Thank you for the query. I would like to enquire about your age, gender, duration of hypertension and whether you suffer from any other comorbities like Diabetes mellitus or Ischemic heart disease. I would also like to ask whether you experience any breathing difficulties (specially on exertion). Amlodipine can indeed cause swelling of the foot. In fact it is a recognised side effect of amlodipine. Since you are also giving a history of repeated UTI, I would advise you go for your Hemoglobin, blood sugar profile (Fasting, 2hrs Post prandial) if not done already and a renal function test (creatinine, urea). These will help to rule out any other cause for the leg swelling. A urine for routine examination (protein loss can be detected) and culture is also recommended (since you may need a course of antibiotics). I would suggest, that you visit your doctor, to rule out any systemic causes of leg swelling. Some other investigations may be needed. Hope this helps you out. Regards, Dr. Ayusmati Thakur
