Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am an adult male, 63 yrs, taking 5mg a day of Amlodipine for hypertension. I am also being investigated for minor occurrences of atrial flutter. I have a severe tooth infection for which I have been prescribed Erythromicin (500mg x 3 a day for 1 week). There is an alternative of Metranidazole (but cannot take penicillin-based antibiotics). Should I be concerned about reported interactions of any of these drugs? Thank you
Hi & Welcome to HCM. Yes, Erythromycin may cause harmful interactions if taken while on Amlodipine. Erythromycin may increase the blood levels of BP lowering medication Amlodipine resulting in certain serious side effects such as excessively low BP, irregular heart rhythm, fluid retention, swelling, & heart failure. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. The other alternative medication Metronidazole does not appear to have any harmful effects if taken along with Amlodipine hence you can take Metronidazole for the severe tooth infection. Hope this will help you.
