Does Amoxicillin Reduce The Efficacy Of Gedarel Contraceptives Pills?
Hello I would like to ask if taking amoxicillin can reduce effectiveness of Gedarel contraceptives pills? I have checked it on the NHS website but there is information that it is not affect on contraceptives pills and also on information leaflet about Gedarel there is not any information about reduce effectiveness during antibiotic treatment. Would you be able to answer my question please?
Gedarel is an oral contraceptive pill that contains two types of female hormones: a progestogen, desogestrel, and an oestrogen, ethinylestradiol in a low dose.
So far, the only antibiotic that studies have shown to cause serious interference with birth control is rifampin, a drug used to treat tuberculosis.
Antibiotics that have been shown to interact with birth control pills to a lesser extent include penicillin, amoxicillin, ampicillin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, tetracycline, minocycline, metronidazole and nitrofurantoin.
It would be safe to use additional means of contraception like condoms and spermicidal agents till the course of these antibiotics is complete.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Ashakiran S, General & Family Physician
