Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am trying to find Bayer Childrens Aspirin for stroke prevention. I am being told that Acetaminolphen acts the same. From what I know that is not the case. Do you have any other info. I know ASA can act as an NSAID but not all NSAIDs are Rx d for stroke prevention. Could you please comment.
Aspirin is an NSAID (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug). Apart from anti-inflammatory property, it is also having the property of antiplatelet activity. So it can be used in inflammation (fever and pain), and also in preventing aggregation of platelets (clotting).
Acetaminophen is an analgesic and antipyretic drug. It lacks anti-inflammatory and antiplatelet property. Therefore it is not much benefit in the prevention of stroke.
Stroke is blocking of blood supply to the brain due to complete or partial blockage of a blood vessel supply to the brain. Blockage of a blood vessel is due to the formation of blood clots. Due to blockage of blood supply, the brain will not get sufficient blood and oxygen and brain cells will die.
Clot formation or decreased by aspirin as it has the property of antiplatelet aggregation property. So aspirin is good for preventing stroke as well as myocardial infarction.
It is a nice thing that you are talking about prevention which is always better than treatment. Hope you will take care of seeing the above aspects and prevent all further complications.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Vamsi Krishna Chittimoju
