Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Good evening doctor. I am a 59 year old male. My doctor recently prescribed avostatin to treat my cholesterol. I have noticed a change ED response is not the same as it was, I was wondering if this could be a side effect of this particular drug. I realize age can be also?
Hi, thank you for your question. Please rate my answer if you are satisfied. Well, atorvastatin and other drugs from statin family have a controversial role with erectile dysfunction. Some studies suggest that they may cause ED while some other studies indicate that they may actually improve ED. But, even those studies which show that they cause ED reveal that the effect was observed with prolonged use of statins. Therefore, in your case it's highly unlikely that your ED is associated with the medicine. Then what is causing it? Two things: One is your age, second is atherosclerosis (narrowing of blood vessels due to thickening of their walls because of cholesterol deposit) and that is the main cause your doctor started you on atorva. So, though I'm not suggesting it, but atorvastatin might even improve your ED (according to a published research).
