Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I was just given a new prescription, atorvastatin to replace my former one of lovastatin. I am type II diabetic. Will this raise my blood sugar (at least any more than perhaps the lovastatin already does, and is the atorvastatin associated with more side effects (serious or not so serious) than lovastatin?
Yes, it is associated with a bit more liver and muscle complications AT THE SAME DOSES as lovastatin But the doses given are typically lower with atorvostatin making side effect profile pretty comparable. Fat goes to the liver and doesn't go to the muscle. This is not really related to glucose, except that diabetics usually have cholesterol elevation and fatty livers.
