My dad 79 has been diagnosed with colon cancer. He is undergoing chemo treatment following a surgery to remove half his colon. His CEA test shows at 37.9, which I know is much higher than the 5 point threshold. He is a smoker. My question, does CEA level indicate life expectancy in any way?
If your dads CEA has come down from the initial level at which it was diagnosed before surgery and chemotherapy then it carries a good prognosis. But if CEA level is going up then i would advise u to do CT scan of whole abdomen and compare with previous scan. If CEA is going up even after 3 rounds of chemotherapy then he may need to switch to second line chemotherapy.
