Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been on canasa for ulcerative colitis for about 1 1/2 years and have gained approximately 10 pounds. My lifestyle has remained the same during this time ( I eat sensibly and exercise and hour to 1 1/2 hours a day, doing both weight-bearing execises and cardio.) Can Canasa be the cause of the weight gain... I have been able to lose a pound of it.
Canasa is composed of 'Mesalazine', which is an aminosalicylate anti-inflammatory drug used to treat inflammatory bowel disease, including ulcerative colitis, or inflamed anus or rectum, and to maintain remission in Crohn's disease.
Side effects are primarily gastrointestinal which include nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain. The other side effect noted is headache. Weight gain is not the side effects listed with its use. Most serious adverse reactions noted with its use include: Renal impairment, Mesalamine-induced acute intolerance syndrome, Hepatic function and Hypersensitivity reactions.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran S,
General & Family Physician
