Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Colestid Decrease The Number Of Bowel Movements?
My doctor has prescribed Colestid because I don t absorb bile salts or B12 due to 18 of my small intestine being removed caused by radiation damage. I ve been getting monthly B-12 shots and my levels are steady and in range, but I have 10-15 bowel movements daily. Will Colestid decrease the number of bowel movements? She has prescribed 2 grams twice daily.
Welcome to HCM. Colestid (Colestipol) is a drug that binds to bile acids in the gut. This complex of colestid and bile acid is then excreted in the stools. Colestid is mainly given in people who have high cholesterol levels in the blood but it can also be sometimes given in diarrhea (Off label use). If the diarrhea is because of excess bile acids in the stools, then colestid can bind to this excess bile acid and help relieve the diarrhea. If you do not feel better with the use of colestid, I would recommend visiting your physician again for a second look, so that the physician can make necessary changes to your prescription. Thank you for giving us the opportunity for helping you. Please feel free to ask if you have any other questions.
