Does Depakote Cause Stomach Discomfort?
I take depakote ER, 250 mg a.m. and 500 mg h.s., and have symptoms that concern me. Can depakote cause an irritation of my stomach lining? I recently had an upper endoscopy and there is an ulcer in my stomach; although I took prescription strength omeprazole (spelling?) for 30 days, the ulcer is still surrounded by inflamed tissue. In addition, I have extremely dry mouth, and my mouth tastes like bile. When I have the urge to urinate, there is little volume output. I have severe neck pain, and have been seeing a physical therapist.

hello there, i have gone through your query and yes depakote can cause stomach discomfort. The generic name is valproic acid and it is known to cause gastric irritation. Usually depakote is given for bipolar disorder or epilepsy and as it has gastric side effects , antacids like ranitidine or rabeprazole are usually prescribed with it. Now you have already been diagnosed with stomach ulcer so I would suggest you to keep in touch with your psychiatrist and Gastroenterelogist. All the best
