Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a question about a medication for my 94 year old mother. She was prescribed diltiazem a few months ago and is suffering hallucinations. There are things that can cause this, but can this medication add to her confusion and hallucinations. They seems to have gotten worse since she started this medication.
I appreciate your concern for your below mother. Diltiazem is unlikely to be the cause of hallucinations. Incomplete data like nature and type of hallucination and other associated symptoms, etc.?? Diltiazem is a calcium channel blocker used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain), and certain heart rhythm disorders. Its most common side effects include: dizziness, edema, constipation, headache, and slow heart beats. Hallucination is not commonly seen as a side effect of Diltiazem. So, in view of the above I would recommend psychiatric consultation to rule out any underlying cause and to treat accordingly.
Wishing your mother a very good health.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
