Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I took Dramamine (for the first time since I was going on a cruise for the first time) and Claritin D (haven t taken in a long time but was getting on a plane) at the same time before boarding a plane. Now I realize that they both have antihistamine in them. I had a reaction of originally swollen lips and tongue. Later, my lips were dry and cracking on the sides. Eventually, I also had white sores in my mouth and grooves on my tongue. I suffer from dry mouth already caused by taking Vyvanse and/or Oxybutynin which I stopped taking for a few days while I was having these symptoms on the cruise. I also stopped taking Dramamine and didn t take any more Claritin D. It hurt to eat until after my lips bled. Then, after a few days my symptoms improved and I was able to eat again with no pain. Now, I don t have any symptoms except for a little dryness and cracking on the corners of my lips. I am wondering if this sounds like a reaction to taking the Dramamine and/or the Claritin D.
You have taken Dramamine which has the most common side effects as it causes medication-related dry mouthxerostomia. Need not to worry. Maintain complete hygiene and apply numbing gel on tongue, lips and you can use lignocaine patches if the pain is there. You should take plenty of fluids and avoid fried food. You should try to breathe from the nose instead of the mouth. Consult your general physician once so that physician can take a complete history and check other symptoms to find what exactly causing your symptoms. The doctor may prescribe an alternative medication course. You should use a saliva substitute as it will enhance the secretions of saliva. You should chew sugar-free gum.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
