Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My father had a right pneumonectomy and has developed empyema in the cavity He has had several infections all treated with antibiotics Does empyema eventually heal itself
this not empyema , it may be post surgical collection because pleura is all ready removed. see size and site of collection and do pus CS . IF PUS THAN NEVER HEAL IT SELF. TAKE CARDIOTHORASIC SURGEON OPINION.
As you said your father had undergone right pneumonectomy, which leads to formation of empty space in right thoracic cage which will be filled temporarily by blood and serum. Infection of thease collection and pus formation is empyema. So, dont worry it will be definately cleared out with the help of proper antibiotics and chest physiotherapy.
