Does Folitrax Tablets For Arthritis Cause Stomach Problems?

My mother in law is of 60 years old she is suffering with goutic arthritis since 5years. Doctor prescribed to take folitrax 10mg due to this she is facing stomach problem could not able to eat properly, is this the side effect of folitrax Tablets, please advice What to do?

Hi! Thank you for using HCM.

Yes Folitrax ( Methotrexate ) can cause stomach problem such: nause, vomiting , abdominal pain , loss of appetite ,dyspepsia..and severe cases mouth ulcers, sure throat, other bruising.
These most often occures in first days on treatment .
If I were your treating doctor I would give also folic acid suplement 1 mg once a day while the patient is on methotrexate.

Also your mother in low try to follow these advice:
-Take the 10 mg pill devided : 5 mg in the morning and 5 mg after 12 hours. Take the pill in the same day of the week that's important. And take the dosage with food

If you have nause I would prescribe an anti -nause drug such as : ondansetron (zofran)
The stomach problems can go away with these advise after your body get used .If you dont feel any better maybe you have to take methotrexate injection .
You should call the treating doctor to discuss for further opinion.
