Does Gabapentin Cause Pain And Swelling In The Ankles And Feet?
I am taking Gabapentin 300, 3 times a day. Been taking that amount since 1/18. During the end of last week my feet, ankles, lower legs and knees swelled severely to the point that the skin was painful. I sit at a desk all day with little walking. Today I have been in my recliner most of the day and the swelling is not as severe but is still there. Am I having an allergic reaction to the medication?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Allergic reactions from oral medications are usually systemic, this means that you should have generalized swelling. It should not be restricted to the feet and legs. This is also not a known side effect of gabapentin though patients react differently to medication. This means that the severe swelling is likely due to another cause. Common causes of swelling of the legs, ankles and feet include- venous disease, liver disease, kidney disease, heart disease, infection. Blood tests and examination are necessary to find the exact cause.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
