Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a grandbaby that is 16 months old that was put on Keppra . she takes 1.6 ml twice a day. She is currently seeing a pediatric neurologist. She walks in circles and her balance is not good. like she is drunk and does not respond like a 16 month old does. she does have a inner ear appointment to check it. We have had her hearing checked by a ear nose and throat doctor and it was fine. I would like to know if it could be the medicine that it is making her be like this. she was fine at 6months old. Very worried about this
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I am Dr Mittal. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I think I should tell you that both these side effects- drowsiness and difficulty in walking, can be caused by Keppra. I think you should meet your neurologist again for a change of dose and/or medicine. This is an anti epileptic medicine. So it was probably started for seizures. So please do not stop it directly. If the baby develops seizures, they may cause damage to the brain themselves. So please meet your neurologist, in addition to the ENT specialist.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Best wishes,
Dr Mittal
