Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
In June 2016, I was taking a benzo (for a year at that time). On June 16 I was prescribed Levaquin for a possible UTI which the doctor said I didn’t have. He said to take the levaquin just in case. That evening I took one 500mg pill and it made me feel horrible. Had diarrhea for a month and my anxiety went through the roof. I’m still tapering off the benzo today and wondering if I’m still affected by the levaquin. Is the damage permanent? Could I still be feeling the effects of the quinolone? Thank you Dave
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It would have worn off by now. The half-life of a medication is the time it takes for the amount of medication in the body to decrease by half. It takes 3 to 5 half-lives for a medication to be almost completely eliminated. The half-life of Levaquin is 6 to 8 hours, this means that it would approximately 18 hours to 40 hours for the medication to be eliminated.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
