Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother 83 yrs in the hospital and she has kidney failure and very low blood pressure, she has massive fluid build up in her tissue and they want to give her this drug levophed along with dopamine so they can do longer dialysis to remove fluid .what are the side effects of levophed?
Levophed is the trade name for the medication norepinephrine. Norepinephrine is found normally in the body in small amounts, the body also releases it as part of the stress (fight or flight response) or in some illnesses.
It does increase the blood pressure and can also increase the pulse rate. Like all meds, there are possible side effects that may or may not occur. All side effects have to be balanced with benefits.
Possible side effects sweating, nausea, vomiting, headache, anxiety, restlessness. There are also effects of not being able to dialyse as needed so these need to be weighed against each other.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
