Does Lisinopril For High BP Lead To Infertility In Men?
My husband takes a 10mg dose of lisinopril for high blood pressure. We are considering having a child but we have heard that lisinopril can cause male infertility by making the sperm unable to fertilize the egg. Does lisinopril really have this effect on sperm? And if so are there any other kinds of high blood pressure medication that do not effect sperm?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Lisinopril is an ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitor, which works by relaxing blood vessels. It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure. Common side effects associated with its use include: Dizziness, lightheadedness, diarrhoea, tiredness, headache, hyperkalemia (raised potassium levels) and dry cough. Its involvement in causing impotence is uncommon (0.1% to 1%) and gynecomastia is rare (less than 0.1%). It is not known to cause male infertility by making sperms unable to fertilize the egg. Hence, let your husband take the medication as advised and do necessary follow-up, without worrying much about it causing infertility or impotence. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
