Does Lorazepam Cause Adverse Side Effects In A Toddler?
our two year old granddaughter may have taken a lorazepam from my wife s purse we just are not sure. The pills were on the floor but we are nto sure how many there were so we cannot tell if she took any. We called poison control and they said that we should look for symptoms during the first hour. It has been over 2 1/2 hours and still no signs of symptoms. Can we let her go to bed or should we continue to observe her for a longer period. We are worried
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Lorazepam would cause sleepiness within the first 20-30 minutes so the fact that your child is not having any increased sleepiness more than 2 hours after she was in contact with the pills shows that very likely she did not swallow any of them.
If the child seems well oriented, answers correctly to answers, seems energetic and has no symptoms that make you doubt something is wrong than she can go to bed and very likely she is going to be fine.
Being cautious and preventing future similar episodes by keeping drugs (and other potentially poisonous chemicals) out of the reach of children is very important because a child of her age is able to access bags and other areas in the house and be at risk of poison.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind regards, Antoneta Zotaj, MD
