Does Lyrica Have Adverse Side Effects In The Long Run?

I have nerve damage to my neck and shoulders due to car collision 6 months ago resulting in periodic discomfort or debilitating pain in my neck/shoulders. Three week ago, my neurologist prescribed Lyrica once per day at bedtime. Doseage = 50 mg. I have taken Lisinopril once per day at doseage of 5 mg for several years. Since taking Lyrica, I have noticed no side effects. Should I have any concerns long term? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Pregabalin is a medication for neuropathic pain indicated for your case, however literature shows that Prgabalin (Lyrica) has known drug interactions with Lisinopril, which you are taking right now.

In particular, angioedema - swelling in the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, or throat, may occur as a consequence.

This can be manifested by a lump in the throat, difficulty of breathing, as well as the visible swelling of the lips, face, and eyelids.

Lyrica is also known for causing sleepiness, dizziness, and drowsiness depending on the dose, for which precaution is advised for persons who are driving and operating machinery.

These are the main concerns when taking Lyrica, and its interaction with lisinopril. I hope this helped, and I recommend a follow-up with your doctor for possible shifting of the medication to prevent any untoward events.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Daryl Derick B. Dizon, General & Family Physician
