Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can taking macrobid cause cold sore flares or is this Ana allergic reaction? I am given macrobid about once a year for UTIs and EVERY time I take it I get terrible cold sores! I never have cold sores pop up just randomly (though I understand how the virus stays latent in the body, mine only seem to manifest when on Macrobid). Thank you!

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Macrobid does give allergic reactions with rash, itching /swelling difficulty in breathing.
The cold sores are due to virus & have a characteristic appearance. It can be diagnosed by culture from the lesion/blood test for antibodies.
You need to go & get examined by your treating doctor. Who would see the sore, get investigated if needful to diagnose & treat specifically (change of medication to avoid if it's allergy /give antiviral drug as per need)?
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
