Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello,’m a frequent marijuana smoker, as it helps me feel physically better and helps with my anxiety/adhd. Somewhere along the line in 2016, I dropped from 146 lbs to 106 lbs in the course of a month. I went and got blood work done for my thyroid to see if I possibly was struggling with underactive/overactive thyroid, as many of the signs that I’m experiencing fall under that specific diagnosis. Yet, my thyroid test came back fine with no issues. My girlfriend has read somewhere recently that active marijuana users (or recent users with use in the past 30 days or so) have affected TSH levels, which would obviously change the direct results of a test regardless of the true issue. Is this true? I have stopped smoking last week in hopes that I could go get another panel done somewhere around may 10th. Is this necessary? Or would I be able to continue smoking? I just really need to find out what’s wrong with me and I need to know if marijuana is affecting my results with the blood work. Any advice or information is appreciated!
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It is good to know that you are health conscious & have blood works done often. Well, if anything is done in the right proportion, correct way & not like crazy, it's not a problem. The problem & symptoms arise whenever addiction occurs, addictions lead to symptoms, pathology & problems. Marijuana users should have regular blood tests done to screen out abnormal laboratory results. Obese & diabetic should avoid it. In marijuana smokers TSH levels are generally not affected. Loss of libido (due to side effects) can occur in addicts, slight TSH levels may be affected (thyroid dysfunction) but it can always be reversed. No worries.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K.
