Does Smoking Marijuana Affect TSH Levels?

Does smoking marijuana a few times weekly affect TSH Levels? My friend had a TSH test with a result of 7.46 two years ago. About 6 months ago he started smoking marijuana a few times a week. When he recently got his TSH checked, his result was 4.36. Could the marijuana be messing with the test?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome.

Yes, marijuana can interfere with normal body functions and the thyroid is indeed very sensitive to it. I would not rule out other factors like diet and inadequate control with medications, but yes marijuana can indeed cause the TSH levels to fluctuate.

Best wishes.
