Does Maxzide Cause Gout?

Could maxzide cause gout? My son has been on maxzide for a few years and no one has checked his metabolic blood sample. He had knee replacement and it was full of gout. I suggested he go to a different doctor. If he has high blood pressure, he should be on a blood pressure med. not just a water pill? Thank you..

Hello - Yes, this diuretic/water pill contains hydrochlorothizide (in the family of thiazides) and these are known to increase the risk of hyperuricemia and gout. With his history of gout, he should be switched to a different blood pressure medication. A medication like this is a common one for the first blood pressure lowering medicine that is tried. It is not only a mild diuretic (water pill) but it also lowers blood pressure. But if there is gout or risk for gout, then a different class of blood pressure medication should be used instead.
