Does Metformin Cause Bloody Stools And Hemorrhoids?

I work in the medical field and I take metformin for diabetes. ..I have since had intestinal issues including one episode with hemorrhoids..Over the past few days my stool has been bloody..enough so that that you can see it in the toilet. I am pretty sure that is not normal.

Hi & Welcome.
The anti-diabetic medication Metformin is unlikely to be the cause for hemorrhoids and bloody stools.

The most common side effects of Metformin include abdominal pain, cramps, loose motions which usually subside over a period of time after adjusting the dose of the medication.

You are advised to consult a general surgeon for proper evaluation to rule out other causes of bleeding such as hemorrhoids, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease or cancer.

Hope the advice given above would be useful.
