Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was just prescribed to take Methenamine Hippurate 1GM Tablet, one daily. Tomorrow I am leaving on vacation for a week, but I don t know if this medicine would interact with wine or alcoholic beverages. I am not a drinker, but on vacation, a glass of wine with dinner is nice. Should I wait until I come back to start taking it???
The drug agencies don't consider interactions with non-prescription chemicals.
This is especially a problem with alcohol and drugs of abuse since alcohol is taken in 100x more amounts than prescriptions (gram not milligram) and with seriously dangerous drugs of abuse.
Theoretically, the interaction would be expected. Methenamine works by breaking down to formaldehyde.
Alcohol reactions are due to a closely related substance acet aldehyde. They have to interact because they are almost the same.
BUT, they do not have to be in the same place, so keeping a reasonable amount of water intake will flush out the bladder and the formaldehyde and it isn't likely to build up except in the bladder.
But I have no idea about this because there is zero actual data on it.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
