Does Mirena IUD Cause Headaches And Abdominal Cramps?

I am a 44 year old female. I am on my second Milena and have had this one for 4 years. In the 9 years I have had this I have not had much of a period. On December 3rd 2017 I started a light cycle for about 15 days. On January 8th 2018 I noticed something wet ( like I had peed myself) I went to the bathroom and I had blood everywhere even flowing down my legs. I cleaned up and put a pad on and within 5 minutes the pad was completely full and flooding. I changed my pad and laid down. I could feel the blood flowing out like I was constantly peeing. After about 15 minutes it slowed down but has not stopped. I am having bad headaches and cramping. Is this something to be concerned about or related to my age or my mirena?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Of course, you have to be worried about it and you should consider visiting a gynecologist.

I think this bleeding is not related to Mirena IUD (Intrauterine device) but maybe to rupture of a varicose vain of the vulva .

I don't think this much bleeding is related to cycle. A colposcopy needs to be done immediately.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka
