Does Nexium Cause Adverse Side Effects In The Long Run?

I had h pylori, was treated, and told to quit taking Nexium for two weeks, then be rechecked. I have only been off 4 days, and am in agony. I have been on Nexium for about 5 years. I was hoping to just stop taking it. Is there some thing that can help me? Are there others ways to re-check h pylori? What are the dangers of long term use? My mom had Barrets esophugus and died from lymphoma.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Yes, your doctor can recheck to determine if the h pylori was cured.

You should let your doctor know that you are having severe pain so that he or she would let you restart medication.

There are issues with long term use of the medication but this would need to be balanced with the risks of untreated severe reflux.
As you mentioned, it can cause changes to occur in the stomach and esophagus.

I hope this helps
