Does Nitrofurantoin 50 Mg Have Any Side Effects?

Hi, I was started on nitrofurantoin yesterday for a UTI. I was not feeling ill with the UTI, just had blood in my urine and some discomfort. I have so far taken 4 doses of 50mg. I feel extremely drowsy, dizzy, slightly nauseous and overnight felt confused and as though my eyes were rolling. Is it likely to be due to side effects of the drug or is it down to the UTI

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Commonly prescribed in the treatment of urinary tract infections Nitrofurantoin is generally well tolerated by most of our patients. It is usually prescribed for 3 to 7 days. However it may cause nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, diarrhea, numbness in your hands and feet, pain in your hands and feet, weakness, and drowsiness.

Based on the history you seem to have developed some of the side effects which are troublesome for you. I advise you to stop taking the tablet and consult your treating doctor for an effective alternate but a safer treatment to treat UTI.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
