Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I took three days of nitrofurantoin because I had a yeast/uti at the same time and had those pills from the last time i had a uti 3 months ago. It wasn t gone yet so then I took sulfamethoxazole because i had 3 more days dosage left from that time. Is it bad to take one after another even though its for the same thing?
The 3 day course of the sulfamethoxazole would not be enough to adequately treat an infection, normally a 7 to 14 day course would be needed. When a shorter that recommended course of an antibiotic is used, it increases the risk of the bacterial developing resistance to that particular antibiotic.
(the antibiotic course is not enough to kill of the bacteria but just enough for the bacteria to work up a defense against it)
The use of antibiotics can cause a yeast infection to develop. Neither of these would treat a yeast infection, you would need an anti fungal, these are anti bacterial.
It is possible , if the symptoms continue, you would need another course of antibiotics along with an antifungal. It would be important to complete the full course even when symptoms resolve
I hope this helps
