However, stress can be an underlying cause for both the conditions. Your description of the symptoms suggest that she is perhaps suffering from GERD. There could be an associated esophageal spasm and/or esophagitis resulting in painful swallowing. A proper clinical exam is needed by a physician to plan further management.
