Does Paxil Cause Bloating And Weight Gain?

Hello I have recently been put on Paxil Medication for severe anxiety disorder. I have always been a healthy young woman exercising daily eating pretty well balanced diet. My worry is that I will bloat and gain weight with Paxil. Is there anything I can do to avoid that from happening?

Hello thanks for asking from HCM

Paxil is Paroxetine. The drug is a SSRI drug and it helps to improve serotonergic neurotransmission. The drug also have anticholinergic effects. It can cause sedation, weight gain, blurred vision and constipation as side effects. It is also known to cause bloating. Usually these symptoms don't last long and improvement occurs with time. For weight gain you can control your diet and try exercise. Exercise will help in reducing the weight. If weight gain becomes significant then you can consult your psychiatrist to prescribe some other drug for severe anxiety that doesn't cause weight gain like Fluoxetine. Fluoxetine is relatively safe and don't cause much weight gain.

Thanks, hope this helps you.
