Does Pica Disorder Cause Low Levels Of Iron, Vitamin B12 And Vitamin D?
Hello. I have been suffering from pica disorder since 10 years now.. recently when I started loosing hair, got blood test done...My doctor detected low levels of iron, vit b12 and vit d..Is this because of pica disorder?I have taken supplements for this... My pica disorder is also gone... How do I make sure I dont hit these deficencies again!!
Hi, Thanks for writing to HCM. Pica is an eating disorder, characterized by an appetite for substances that are largely non-nutritive like paper, clay, metal, chalk, soil, glass or sand. Complications may occur due to the substance consumed. It causes iron and vitamin B12 deficiency and hence one of the prime symptoms id iron deficiencyanaemia. For this you need to take supplements on a long term basis as prescribed by your doctor. Slowly, with behavioral change, you will fall back to normal. Hope the information provided would be useful. All the best.
