Does Pioglitazone Cause Weight Gain And Heart Problems?
My Endocrinologist put me on Pioglitazone to help decrease my A1C. I was told that it will cause weight gain and could effect the heart. I have an appointment to see my cardiologist already due to some effects that may be due to my heart. Should I continue taking this med and discontinue and contact my endocrinologist.
Thanks for posting this query on HCM! I appreciate your concern regarding the safety profile of Pioglitazone.
Pioglitazone is basically used to control the diabetes but known to cause retention of salt and water to the extent of causing collection of fluids in the tissues around the ankles, feet and hands. In its severe form fluid gets accumulated in the lungs causing difficulty in breathing and other problems related to heart.
Contact your doctor at once if you develop swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet; shortness of breath; or sudden, unexplained weight gain. Your doctor may need to stop your medicine or change your dose.
I hope your query has been explained as per your expectation. Regards!
