My fathers blood sugar is 380. He has had controlled type 2 diabetes for 18 years. He was given a Rx of prednisone for a rash yesterday morning and told to take 6 pills (totaling 60 mg) I believe this may have thrown his sugar off. What to do! His Dr. has not called back and we are worried. He feels fine but this mornng he was dizzy.
You are right. Prednisone is a steroid which causes high blood sugar as a side effect. He must try to increase physical activity and adjust insulin dose after consulting his treating physician to bring down blood sugar levels. Ask him to monitor his blood sugar and when any symptoms like dizziness appear , report it to the physician. Talk to your doctor about discontinuation of prednisone and if he can recommend a NSAID (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug) as Steroids affect diabetes control by increasing glucose intolerance.
