Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m using prednisone for asthma problems currently. Got bit badly by a cat this week and was prescribed anti biotic. Will the prednisone decrease the effectiveness of the antibiotic or prevent my immune system from fighting infection from the cat bite?
NOt a bit. (or bite!) The amount of prednisone you need to really inhibit the immune system are many times more than the usual doses for allergy. Furthermore, even people without ANY immune system still respond to antibiotics. On the other hand, there are other reasons the antibiotic might not work. Number one is that the most common infecton type (staph) is also one of the most resistant to antibiotics and if possible the germ should be isolated and tested to see what works on it.
