I m taking progesterone for pmdd for physical and emotional symptoms. I m confused because the progesterone causes those symptoms and I don t have an imbalance so what does it do and when does it ry better? And how does it help the emotional aspect if progesterone lowers your serotonin level
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Progesterone is a female sex hormone. It doesn't alter the levels of serotonin. However, it can cause certain side effects, which are as follows: stomach upset, changes in appetite, weight gain, fluid retention and swelling (edema), fatigue, acne, drowsiness or insomnia, allergic skin rashes, fever, headache, depression and breast discomfort or enlargement. If you are experiencing any of the above side effects and is bothering you, you need to seek medical attention promptly.
Hope the information provided helps. All the best.
Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran. S
