Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had prolia shots for app. 3 years but have not had one in a year. I am having to get a tooth extracted and dentist told me since I have been taking them there is a chance that it could affect my mouth as the same as Fosomax could. Is this true?
Prolia contains active ingredient Denosumab that is a monoclonal antibody used frequently for the treatment of Osteoporosis and other conditions related to bone..
Fosamax on the other hand is a bisphosphonate and it is also commonly used for Osteoporosis..
Both are seen to cause Osteonecrosis of the jaw but the incidence are more common with Bisphosphonates like Fosamax..
However there are lesser evidences but in many reported cases, individuals who received Prolia injections are also seen to have developed Osteonecrosis of the jaw..
But as it is already one year that you have not taken the dose, the chances of severe side effects are less..
So my suggestion is to once consult your Physician and get evaluated and if they give you a consent you can very much proceed for extraction under supervision of an oral surgeon..
Hope this helps..
Regards.
