Does Risperidone Increase The Chances Of Grand Mal Seizures Occurrence?
My mother suffered two grand mal seizures in her forties. She has not had a re-occurrence and is now 86 years old and was diagnosed with alzheimers and dementia with psychotic episodes(hallucinations) Course of treatment recommended is Risperidone. Given her history is there a big risk for her having seizures if she starts taking this medication?do
Among atypical antipsychotics, Clozapine and Olanzapine drugs at higher doses can lower seizure threshold and precipitate seizures. However, other atypical antipsychotic drugs like Risperidone, Quetiapine, and Ziprasidone have little effect on the seizure threshold.
But there is increased risk of stroke in elderly which should be kept in your mind while starting the treatment. Please discuss these points with you treating doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
