Does Slippery Elm Help In Treating Diabetes?

I have been using Slippery Elm almost daily for about 15 years. I will take 2 capsules once a day, sometime 2 or 3 times a day depending stomach or bowl disorders and find it is helpful. I first learned about it when I found out I had Diverticulitis.Am I taking too much of Slippery Elm? What harm can it do to me. Question 2. Is Slippery Elm good for Diabetics? Thank You for your support. Ethel Bollong

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thanks for your query.

I shall make an effort to provide you with good professional recommendations specific to your questions.
Slippery elm is a demulcent, an agent that coats and protects mucosal surfaces.
Natural health practitioners recommend slippery elm for a variety of needs including sore throat, colds, coughs, bladder infections, digestive ulcers, burns, and wounds.
Standard dosing depends on the weight of the individual, but generally recommended is Capsules: 400 - 500 mg 3 - 4 times daily.
Regarding your second question, it may alter blood sugar levels by reducing the rate at which sugar is absorbed from the intestine. Therefore diabetics, hypoglycemic individuals and people using medication to regulate sugar levels should use slippery elm with caution.
Yet again, I duly appreciate your query to me, I do hope that have found something useful to help you and I shall be glad to answer any further apprehensions.

Sincerely,
I find this answer helpful
